Originally inspired by the cosmic visions embodied in the music of the late Sun Ra, Living by Lanterns brings together four each of Chicago's and New York's leading players to form an outstanding octet. The group’s original arrangements were devised for a special project that built complete compositions from fragments of a 1961 Run Ra rehearsal tape. From there, the group has proceeded to build its own unique and personal repertoire, featuring some of the USA’s best contemporary improvisers. Living by Lanterns features Greg Ward & Ingrid Laubrock(saxophones), Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet), Tomeka Reid (cello), Mary Halvorson (guitar), Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone), Joshua Abrams(bass), and Tomas Fujiwara & Mike Reed (drums).
